A phoenix-themed memorial to late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was inaugurated by Chief Minister K Palaniswami at the Marina on Wednesday, three years after he and his deputy O Panneerselvam laid the foundation stone.

Palaniswami inaugurated the memorial amid slogans hailing the former AIADMK supremo by party supporters as Panneerslevam and Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal joined him.
With Palaniswami and Panneerselvam prostrating at the spot where she was laid to rest after her death on December 5, 2016, the three later paid floral tributes.

The three also paid tribute at the memorial to a massive portrait of Jayalalithaa.

In May 2018, Palaniswami and Panneerselvam jointly laid the foundation stone for the memorial adjacent to that of M G Ramachandran, the party member and late chief minister, located at Kamarajar Salai on Marina Beach.

In attendance were ministers, MPs, MLAs and senior party leaders.
For the building of the phoenix-themed memorial for Jayalalithaa, affectionately addressed by her supporters as ‘Amma’ (Mother), the state government had earlier earmarked Rs 50 crore.

The Kamarajar Salai was thronged by a large crowd of supporters to witness the inauguration of the memorial.
